Disasters, Tragedies, and Incidents

The recent Virginia Tech incident is probably on everyone’s mind until the next controversial topic, natural disaster, unnatural human invention, or violent act. I noticed that all flags are at half staff as a way of symbolizing the national sorrow of those lost on Monday, April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech. Given the state of events in this country on an ongoing basis, perhaps we should just fly the flag at half staff from now on. This is simply a compilation of events from a recent week-and-a-half in history courtesy of Questoids.

April 10, 1919- Mexican Revolution leader Emiliano Zapata is shot and killed by government forces in Morelos.

April 13, 1943- The discovery of a mass grave of Polish prisoners-of-war executed by Soviet forces is announced in Germany.

April 13, 1919- The Amritsar Massacre (in northern India), British Indian Army soldiers opened fire on a gathering of unarmed men, women and children- killing at least 379 people and perhaps as many as 1000.

April 14, 1865- President Abraham Lincoln is shot by John Wilkes Booth at the Ford Theater.

April 15, 1912- The RMS Titanic sinks at about 2:20 AM after hitting an iceberg a few hours earlier.

April 18, 1906- An earthquake destroys much of San Francisco.

April 19, 1995- Oklahoma City federal building is bombed.

April 20, 1889- Adolph Hitler is born.

April 20, 1999- Columbine High School Massacre in Colorado.

Enough said.
